We are currently seeking an experienced 1st Class Lineman who is either a resident or willing to relocate within a one-hour radius of our main office. The successful candidate will be responsible for repairing and replacing transmission and distribution power lines, ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards while working on or near energized conductors and electrical accessories. The role involves opening switches or grounding devices to de-energize lines as directed by the Line Supervisor, climbing poles or using bucket trucks to remove defective wires, and securing new wires to cross arm insulators. The Lineman will also splice wires to complete circuits, transfer wires from defective poles, and install various pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as transformers and switches. Safety is paramount, and the Lineman will utilize insulated ladders and platforms, as well as rubber mats, to handle high voltage lines without interrupting service. Additional responsibilities may include servicing streetlight systems and patrolling power lines as assigned. Candidates must be prepared to work in outdoor environments under various weather conditions and should possess the physical stamina to perform tasks that include standing, walking, kneeling, and climbing. The position requires a cooperative attitude and the ability to work well with others, including fellow workers, inspectors, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and replace transmission and distribution power lines between generating stations, substations, and consumers.
  • Use precautionary work methods and safety equipment due to electrical hazards.
  • Open switches or clamps grounding devices to de-energize lines or accessories as directed by the Line Supervisor.
  • Climb poles or ride in bucket trucks to remove broken or defective wires.
  • Secure new wire to cross arm insulators and splice wire to adjoining sections of line to complete circuits.
  • Transfer wires from defective poles to newly erected poles.
  • Install pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses, and insulators using hand tools.
  • Suspend insulated ladders and platforms from pole cross arms and cover energized lines with rubber mats for safe handling of high voltage lines.
  • Use long insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanical or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools.
  • Service streetlight systems and patrol power lines as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver license (CDL).
  • Experience with maximum voltage power line repair such as 120-240 volt secondary circuits, 23,000-35,000 volt distribution lines or 138 kilowatt transmission lines.
  • Experience in repair of energized lines or de-energized conductors suspended from electronically conductive metal towers, commonly 100 ft or more above ground.
  • Must live within 1 hour of Haynes Electric Utility Corporation's main office or must be willing to relocate to Western North Carolina.
  • 1st Class Journeyman Lineman certificate or proof of successful completion of a recognized Lineman Apprenticeship preferred but not required.
  • Must have a positive and cooperative attitude and excellent attendance.
  • Must be able to get along with fellow workers, other tradesmen on the job site, inspectors, customers and the public.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1st Class Journeyman Lineman certificate or proof of successful completion of a recognized Lineman Apprenticeship preferred but not required.
