About the position

At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business. Founded by engineers — and customer obsessed — we leap at every opportunity to tackle technical challenges, from designing next-gen UI/UX for interfacing with data to scaling our services and infrastructure across millions of virtual machines. And we're only getting started. Databricks Mosaic AI is building a brand new line of products which leverage generative AI to enable our customers to build enterprise data intelligence. We are looking to hire an experienced engineering manager to lead a team of both backend and applied AI engineers building these products. You will thrive in this role if you love the 0 to 1 stage of building products and also have a strong desire to make a long-lasting impact in the AI space. This is a high-visibility role where you will work closely with senior leaders across the company, within engineering, as well as with product management, field engineering, recruiting and HR.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the direction and architecture of a new generative AI product line by working closely with your team of both backend and applied AI engineers, researchers, product management, and senior leadership.
  • Ensure operational excellence and the overall success of the team's products.
  • Oversee the recruitment and development of top-tier talent to build a cohesive and dynamic engineering team.
  • Foster leadership within the team through coaching, and providing growth opportunities.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including AI researchers, ML engineers, and product teams, to deliver impactful AI solutions that enhance user productivity and satisfaction.
  • Evolve the organizational structure to support long-term plans.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as an IC and 2+ years of Engineering Management experience.
  • Technical strength in at least one (ideally both) of distributed systems and applied AI.
  • Experience running large-scale production systems and the processes around operational excellence, testing, monitoring, and SLAs.
  • Strength in execution: ability to drive sprawling efforts across multiple product areas while keeping a close pulse on and course correcting team execution velocity.
  • Ability to work cross functionally with AI research, product management, and partner engineering teams to deliver a roadmap.
  • Ability to attract, hire, and mentor engineers of the highest caliber; experience in growing leaders and integrating top-tier talent.

Nice-to-haves

  • Curiosity about all parts of the company's success and willingness to learn new technologies.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits and perks that meet the needs of all employees.
  • Eligibility for annual performance bonus, equity, and other benefits.
