About the position

The Management Forester position involves providing technical assistance to landowners in all areas of forest management. Responsibilities include writing multiple resource-based forest management plans, assisting with timber sales on state lands, and providing guidance on afforestation and reforestation efforts. The role also requires diagnosing insect and disease infestations, assessing storm damage to forest lands, and developing prescribed burning plans. Additionally, the forester will assist in establishing Streamside Management Zones, present forestry programs to school groups and local government bodies, and help landowners with cost-share programs. The position may involve operating heavy equipment and assisting with fire control as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance to landowners in all areas of forest management.
  • Write multiple resource-based forest management plans for landowners.
  • Assist with timber sales on state lands.
  • Provide technical assistance to landowners in afforestation and reforestation.
  • Diagnose insect and disease infestations and make recommendations for control.
  • Assess storm damage to forest lands.
  • Develop prescribed burning plans and assist with implementation.
  • Provide assistance with establishing Streamside Management Zones.
  • Present forestry programs to school groups and local government bodies.
  • Assist landowners with cost-share programs.
  • Prepare reports, including measuring and computing acreage.
  • Assist landowners in control of burns.
  • May operate heavy equipment.
  • Assist with fire control as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, forest resources, or closely related major with core forestry coursework from a SAF accredited school, or an associate degree in forestry with forestry coursework from an SAF accredited school.
  • Georgia Registered Forester certification.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and GIS.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of southeastern forestry.
  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, forest resources, or a closely related field that includes core forestry coursework from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited college or university.
