About the position

The GM of M&R develops positive customer relations by understanding customer needs, contract terms and conditions, and by implementing and executing plans to address those needs. The M&R Manager directs a union workforce in the execution of maintenance and repair activities for port terminal equipment and machinery. Safety, Customer Service, Labor Relations, Equipment Asset Management, and Equipment Availability are the areas of focus for this position. This position supports an onsite 24 hour, 7 day work week.

Responsibilities

  • Management of mechanics and leadmen, in their work assignments and evaluate the performance of all employees under your direction.
  • Participate in the development and Implementation of company safety policies and procedures.
  • Actively manage and monitor the safety of your operation, ensuring safety of all employees.
  • Identify training opportunities of staff as needed.
  • Determine work needs for each shift and assign such work to the workforce.
  • Manage and implement daily operational changes to improve efficiency and quality of work.
  • Analyze the quality of work performed, post-audit repairs with mechanics as needed.
  • Reassign mechanics to other locations or work assignments based on operational need.
  • Payroll processing and schedule management.
  • Manages finances, accounting, and billing to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Manage inventory and part ordering process.
  • Select and evaluate leadmen for your operations.
  • Ensure work orders are documented and communicated timely.
  • Engage in an interactive process with mechanics, as necessary, regarding reasonable accommodation of disabilities.
  • Participate in the interview process for potential new hires and make recommendations.
  • Conduct 30, 60, and 90-day evaluations for all new hires.
  • Adhere to the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and ensure positive labor relations with mechanics and union officials.
  • Issue internal warnings and/or employer complaints as needed.
  • Address and manage worker’s comp procedures.
  • Keeps Director and VP updated and informed daily of Safety, Customer Service, Production, and Labor Relation activities.
  • All other duties and projects assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Marine, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or equivalent and applicable working experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of general supervisory experience in maintenance and repair or union environments preferred.
  • Experience in Programmable Logic Controls in GE, FUJI, Siemens, and OMRON highly desired.
  • Familiar with the maintenance of engines, hydraulic systems, refrigeration systems, container and chassis maintenance and container cranes highly desired.
  • Valid driver’s license and TWIC.
