About the position

At Google, we put our users first. The world is always changing, so we need Product Managers who are continuously adapting and excited to work on products that affect millions of people every day. In this role, you will work cross-functionally to guide products from conception to launch by connecting the technical and business worlds. You can break down complex problems into steps that drive product development. One of the many reasons Google consistently brings innovative, world-changing products to market is because of the collaborative work we do in Product Management. Our team works closely with creative engineers, designers, marketers, etc. to help design and develop technologies that improve access to the world's information. We're responsible for guiding products throughout the execution cycle, focusing specifically on analyzing, positioning, packaging, promoting, and tailoring our solutions to our users. As an entrepreneurial, technical, and strategic Principal Product Manager, you will translate capabilities and experiences from the external tooling ecosystem into tangible, high-impact prototypes that inform and drive Google's strategic direction for developer productivity and innovation. Your mission is to pioneer transformative advancements in Google's internal developer experience by identifying strategic opportunities, rapidly prototyping innovative solutions, and influencing Product Area-level investments. You will operate at the intersection of external technology and Google's complex internal landscape, acting as a key driver for how we progress our strategic plans for developer excellence. In this role, you will successfully de-risk ambiguous areas and identify focused strategic investments, create compelling outlooks for the future, and convincing others in the organization to join you to scale your outlook. Google Cloud accelerates every organization's ability to digitally transform its business and industry. We deliver enterprise-grade solutions that leverage Google's cutting-edge technology, and tools that help developers build more sustainably. Customers in more than 200 countries and territories turn to Google Cloud as their trusted partner to enable growth and solve their most critical business problems.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze the external developer tooling landscape (startups, open-source, AI, platform shifts) to identify and articulate strategic opportunities and threats relevant to the Product Area's long-term developer experience goals.
  • Design, build, and iterate on sophisticated prototypes of novel developer tools and experiences that address complex, multi-dimensional problems and validate strategic hypotheses.
  • Influence C-level leadership and cross-functional partners on strategic priorities and investment decisions, using compelling data, demonstrated prototypes, and strategic narratives.
  • Advocate successful prototypes and incubated strategies, leading complex, often multi-quarter, cross-organizational initiatives to drive their adoption and integration.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of innovative concepts, ensuring they align with broader strategic objectives and create a pipeline for sustained impact on developer experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience in product management or a related technical role.
  • 5 years of experience taking technical products from conception to launch.
  • Experience with the domain area of Generative AI or Large Language Models (LLMs).

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • Experience architecting and building solutions leveraging generative AI (e.g., using frameworks like LangChain, working with LLMs, vector databases), and an understanding of its application to developer productivity.
  • Ability to navigate extreme ambiguity, define structure where none exists, and deliver results in fast-paced, evolving environments.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and people management skills, with the ability to build trust and consensus across broad audiences.

Benefits

  • The US base salary range for this full-time position is $227,000-$320,000 + bonus + equity + benefits.
