Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states. The Waymo Logs Data Acquisition team is dedicated to building and maintaining the infrastructure that ingests necessary data from our autonomous vehicles into the cloud. We are responsible for the entire data pipeline, starting with the onboard logging collection infrastructure, where we define data formats, APIs, and libraries to ensure seamless data capture. We also manage the data ingestion pipeline, developing and overseeing uploader modules across LTE, Wifi, and wired connections, along with temporary storage and post-upload data processing infrastructure. We maintain offboard components that facilitate onboard data collection and ingestion, including quota management, sampling strategies, and prioritized upload requests. A core part of our work involves creating strategies and infrastructure, both onboard and offboard, to maximize the value of the limited data we collect, balancing several requirements, constraints, and safety regulations. This includes the application of advanced statistical sampling and machine learning techniques to improve data use, we are committed to achieving operational readiness to increase the number of miles-driven, focusing on reliability improvements and eliminating overheads that would otherwise scale linearly with distance.
