About the position

Benchling's data infrastructure and computation platform powers high-scale work at the world's leading biotech companies. Our Data Platform and Infrastructure teams build and maintain the overall architecture of Benchling and build new cross-service capabilities to support new teams and needs. We ensure the system is secure, performant, and reliable by default, and advise and assist application teams in doing the same for their areas of responsibility. In this role, you'll use your tried experience to design and build the systems underlying Benchling's services and applications. Your work will ensure the agility, performance, reliability, and security of Benchling.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy and architecture for significant projects across Data Platform and Infrastructure teams.
  • Design and implement systems and write code.
  • Improve the reliability of Benchling systems at scale.
  • Build integrations with 3rd party systems (e.g Snowflake).
  • Shepherd Benchling into a multi-services world.
  • Define and lead processes for site reliability used across Engineering and Customer Experience.
  • Define and lead processes for disaster recovery.
  • Define and implement infrastructural security posture.
  • Design release procedures for regulatory environments.
  • Mentor other engineers and be a significant multiplier across the team.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of experience as a Software Engineer building, designing and architecting data platform and infrastructure systems.
  • 5+ years of experience with building and operating SaaS products hosted in a public cloud.
  • Experience shipping and maintaining a horizontally scaled stateful service in a public cloud for a large set of customers.
  • Led a large migration (e.g., from monolith to multi-services) or led the refactoring or replacement of a large hosted service.
  • Deep familiarity with micro-services architecture and design of distributed systems using managed Kubernetes, service mesh, and distributed secrets store.
  • Experience with deployment and configuration management frameworks such as Terraform, Ansible, or Chef; CI/CD systems such as BuildKite or Jenkins; and containers and container management systems such as Kubernetes or Amazon ECS.
  • Ability to write clear, well-tested code in Python, Java, Go, or Ruby.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
