About the position

The Sr. Staff Product Solutions Engineer serves as a product manager, solutions engineer, adoption driver, and delivery partner manager, defining, selling, and supporting a variety of bespoke, customer-specific products. The Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team will work closely with our most strategic customers to deeply understand their use cases and design, build, and implement products for them. This role requires a unique blend of technical expertise, account management skills, and extensive knowledge of data systems. The Sr. Staff Product Solutions Engineer will leverage their deep understanding of data architectures, data management, and data cataloging to provide technical guidance, proactive support, and strategic solutions to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform discovery and document customer requirements for bespoke FDE products.
  • Research Alation and third-party data source product capabilities, identifying what is possible within customer budgets, and the scope/cost tradeoffs that are required.
  • Communicate and receive customer acceptance for the final product design.
  • Create product requirements documents (PRDs) and communicate them to FDE Engineers or external development partners.
  • Oversee product development by FDE Engineers or external development partners, from a product management perspective.
  • Ensure delivered products meet customer requirements and expectations.
  • Manage beta testing, feedback, and troubleshooting.
  • Create customer facing product documentation.
  • Enable Professional Services and other cross functional teams on product capabilities and delivery methodologies.
  • Identify demand for new FDE products and pitch ideas to FDE and Alation Product Management leadership.
  • Act as the face of the FDE program to customers.
  • Partner with Sales teams to drive FDE opportunities from accepted leads to closure.
  • Ensure FDE products are delivering value and renewing.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key client stakeholders.
  • Develop a deep understanding of client business objectives and data strategies.
  • Manage third-party development partner relationships, agreements and commercials.
  • Drive adoption and utilization of FDE products.
  • Identify and pursue upsell and cross-sell opportunities within client accounts.
  • Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to drive new business and expand market reach.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of experience in data management, data warehousing, or data engineering.
  • Deep understanding of data architectures, data modeling, data integration, including relational databases, NoSQL databases, data lakes, and cloud data platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with data catalog software or similar solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and other data query languages.
  • Solid understanding of API and system integration challenges.
  • Familiarity with data governance, data quality, and data security best practices.
  • Field experience: 12+ years of experience in customer-facing roles, preferably in a product management, technical account management or sales engineering capacity.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple client accounts and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
