About the position
Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way. The Airbnb Payments team supports this mission by economically empowering Airbnb businesses and our global community of guests and hosts. We are building a world-class payments platform that moves billions of dollars, in 191 countries, with 75 currencies, through a complex ecosystem of payments partners. As the platform grows, we’ll be adding new payment partners, global licenses, compliance and regulation controls, and building new payment experiences for our guests and hosts. Payments Transactions is building the core billing system for Airbnb money movements. The team engineers are responsible for the seamless orchestration and recording of Airbnb’s payment obligations with our community. They initiate, advance, and realize Airbnb’s payment commitments with our community in a way that is reliable, accurate, timely, scalable, and auditable.
Responsibilities
- Provide thought leadership, define strategy, influence cross functional collaboration and drive architectural decisions.
- Lead multi-team technical initiatives, and work cross-functionally to identify opportunities for business impact, refine, and prioritize requirements for engineering systems.
- Architect and implement complex features, focusing on data-driven decision making and performance optimizations.
- Lead efforts with other engineering teams to advance Airbnb’s engineering processes and technical foundations.
- Drive systemic improvements by identifying patterns to streamline development, reduce toil and increase technical quality and operational excellence over time.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers through design reviews, code walkthroughs, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
Requirements
- 9+ years of experience in a hands-on software engineering role.
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience (Payments/Fintech) as a backend software engineer.
- Experience leading design, implementation, and deployment of one or more high scale, cross-functional payment systems.
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree, preferably in CS, or equivalent experience.
- Technical leadership: hands on experience leading project teams, setting technical direction and strategy and mentoring engineers.
- Passionate about efficiency, availability, technical quality and system quality.
- Proven experience in defining product/technical strategy and driving alignment with cross-functional leaders and stakeholders.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with experience driving initiatives that span across teams, departments and leadership.
