About the position

The Academic Manager at David L Carrasco Job Corps Center is responsible for overseeing the Academic Department, ensuring that the Job Corps-approved curriculum is effectively taught. This role involves planning, directing, and supervising academic activities while modeling and mentoring students in essential career success standards. The position requires a commitment to preparing young people for the workforce through effective teaching methods and staff management.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and supervises the activities of the Academic Department.
  • Ensures Job Corps-approved curriculum is being taught in individual classrooms.
  • Supervises procurement and use of supplemental materials, including multimedia equipment and materials.
  • Projects and plans for instructional needs and ensures proper teaching methods are employed.
  • Plans and administers departmental budget.
  • Assesses personnel needs and collaborates with HR to screen and interview potential staff members.
  • Approves promotions, transfers, and merit evaluations within the department.
  • Prepares and conducts performance appraisals.
  • Prepares and submits reports as required, ensuring proper records on students' progress and attendance are maintained.
  • Formulates proposals and makes recommendations to the Director on changes to policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes data to evaluate curriculum teaching methods and community participation.
  • Responsible for ensuring departmental equal employment and affirmative action objectives are met.
  • Develops a planned orientation program for new instructors and provides in-service training for staff.
  • Conducts regular meetings with department staff to clarify purposes and roles.
  • Encourages instructors to share abilities and talents and assigns participation in center activities.
  • Supervises teaching in classrooms and evaluates each instructor periodically.
  • Counsels students about schedules and manages scheduling changes in collaboration with the Career Technical Training Manager.
  • Adheres to Odle's Quality Assurance Plan, verifying that all students have an assigned schedule in CIS.
  • Attends required staff training sessions.
  • Models appropriate CSS and employability skills, including personal responsibility and computer fluency.
  • Maintains accountability of staff, students, and property, adhering to safety practices.
  • Cultivates a climate free of harassment, intimidation, and disrespect.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education preferred.
  • Three years teaching or work-related experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record preferred.
  • Certified to teach in the state in which the center is located preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students and effectively relate to the trainee population.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Experience in a managerial role within an educational setting.
  • Familiarity with Job Corps programs and standards.
