About the position

The position involves managing moderately complex litigation related to auto or property contracts, ensuring compliance with state laws and regulations. The role requires strategic planning for defense or settlement, effective negotiation, and collaboration with defense counsel to achieve favorable resolutions. A key focus is on delivering exceptional member service through proactive communication and empathy.

Responsibilities

  • Manage moderately complex litigation involving serious injury or property damage, questionable damages, liability, and coverage issues.
  • Apply intermediate knowledge of claims litigation processes.
  • Proactively manage litigation and act as a liaison with members and counsel.
  • Document litigation strategy, budget, investigation, evaluation, negotiation, settlement, and trial decisions.
  • Represent USAA at mediations, case conferences, and trials.
  • Review, audit, and approve legal fees and expenses.
  • Partner with law firm vendors to facilitate timely lawsuit resolution.
  • Hold law firm vendors accountable for compliance with litigation handling requirements.
  • Recognize and solve routine and intermediate issues in legal case management.
  • Improve processes to enhance quality, timeliness, and efficiency of the team.
  • Advise on moderately complex litigation to membership, attorneys, and management.
  • Ensure high levels of service for members from law firm vendors.
  • Identify, measure, monitor, and control risks associated with business activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 4 years of experience handling liability and first party claims or progressive experience in litigation.
  • 2 years of customer contact experience.
  • Claims adjusters license in assigned state or ability to acquire within 3 months.
  • Demonstrated negotiation and customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication skills as a liaison between partners, members, outside counsel, and management.
  • Knowledge of P&C policies and state laws.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance related to claims and litigation.
  • Experience handling large loss auto, property, or commercial claims.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5+ years' experience handling casualty liability claims including bodily injury and uninsured/underinsured motorist claims.
  • 2+ years' direct handling of Auto Bodily Injury and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Litigation to resolution.
  • Familiarity with injury claims litigation processes.
  • Continuing Education including relevant insurance designations (SCLA, CPCU, AIC, etc.)
