About the position

This position is responsible for assigning ICD diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient medical records or outpatient infusion accounts according to coding guidelines. The coder must complete coding for all accounts within a timely manner, adhering to a four-day bill hold timeframe, and follow up on accounts requiring coding queries or documentation from clinicians or medical staff. The role emphasizes coding quality and productivity standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assign ICD diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient medical records or outpatient infusion accounts according to coding guidelines.
  • Complete coding for all accounts within the four-day bill hold timeframe.
  • Follow up on accounts needing coding queries or documentation completion by clinicians or medical staff.
  • Demonstrate coding competencies with quality and meet department productivity standards.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Health Information Management or equivalent combination of post-secondary education and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years recent acute care hospital inpatient coding or outpatient infusion coding experience.
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification by AHIMA, or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification by AAPC.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with utilizing the 3M encoder software system and electronic abstracting system.
  • Proficient computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology, diagnosis and procedural terms.
