About the position

The Sr. Data Center Construction Manager at Align is responsible for overseeing the construction management of large-scale data center projects. This role involves managing project scope, quality, schedule, and budget while ensuring effective communication with subcontractors and clients. The position requires a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, as well as the ability to drive project success through collaboration and problem-solving on construction sites.

Responsibilities

  • Directly interface with construction general contractors during the bidding, award, execution, and project closeout/punch list phases.
  • Conduct negotiations with general contractors and evaluate bids/proposals with detail and accuracy.
  • Monitor the progress of each project through updated schedules, communicate changes, and manage client expectations.
  • Create construction project scope and request for proposals.
  • Perform financial analysis of construction projects.
  • Manage construction project quality control and resolve scope problems with subcontractors.
  • Conduct constructability reviews of electrical and mechanical designs for new data centers or optimization of existing ones.
  • Manage construction document processes including submittal review, RFI's, change orders, and invoicing.
  • Record and report key construction metrics to team members and management.
  • Drive teams to perform troubleshooting and root-cause failure analysis associated with equipment failures.
  • Assist with the sales process by developing client and partner relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent engineering science, or 6+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in construction management of large, complex mission-critical projects involving large-scale mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) plants, with some data center construction experience preferred.
  • Strong general contractor and vendor management experience including request for proposals, bidding, change orders, and quality control.
  • Solid experience in constructing electrical engineering systems and mechanical engineering systems including cooling systems.
  • Strong client relationship management experience and ability to interact with executive-level clients.
  • Possess strong documentation skills and clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to read and interpret construction specifications and drawings for all disciplines.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Experience in controls and commissioning of large-scale projects.
  • Strong MS Excel and MS Project experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Understanding of electrical engineering principles including switch gear, UPS, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles for cooling systems.
  • Experience related to the design or construction of data centers or large-scale mechanical and electrical plants.
  • Proven ability to reduce costs through creative solutions without impacting quality and reliability.
  • Experience with power management and power monitoring systems.
  • Certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), LEED, and/or Certified Construction Manager (CCM).
