About the position

The Art Assistant at the World Bank Group plays a crucial role in the management and care of the organization's extensive collection of artworks. This position involves the safe handling, transportation, installation, and deinstallation of artworks within a museum setting, ensuring the preservation of collection items. The Art Assistant collaborates closely with the Art Program Coordinator and Curator, contributing to exhibitions and enhancing the visibility and accessibility of the World Bank's permanent collection.

Responsibilities

  • Carefully packing and unpacking artworks for storage, transport, and exhibitions using appropriate materials and techniques.
  • Installing and removing artworks from exhibition spaces according to exhibition design plans.
  • Assisting with the loading and unloading of artwork onto vehicles, ensuring proper securing and protection during transport.
  • Documenting the condition of artworks before, during, and after handling, noting any damage or concerns.
  • Maintaining proper storage conditions for artwork in museum storage facilities.
  • Accurately tracking and documenting the location and condition of museum collection items.
  • Adhering to all museum safety protocols related to artwork handling, including lifting techniques and proper use of protective gear.
  • Producing and installing short and long-form labels for artworks on display and creating texts for exhibitions and publications.
  • Performing upkeep of the Art Program's collection database, TMS/Gallery Systems/emuseum.
  • Performing photographic record keeping of individual artworks and installations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or preferably a Bachelor's Degree in studio art, museum studies, or related art field.
  • Minimum of two years of art handling experience in a museum, gallery, artist studio, private or corporate collection, or similar environment.
  • Familiarity with standard museum practices, terminology, and art history.
  • Understanding of different art materials, framing techniques, and installation methods.
  • Awareness and understanding of art mounts, supports, and structures.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools.
  • Working knowledge of outdoor and indoor artistic mediums (stone, iron, steel, wood, canvas, etc.).
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds, and up to 100 with assistance.
  • Effective collaboration with other Art Program staff, including curators and registrars.
