About the position

The Fire & Recreation Crew Member position with the Southeast Conservation Corps is a full-time, seasonal role focused on conservation service projects in Kentucky. Crew members will engage in various natural resource management activities, including wildfire management and recreation site improvements, while gaining valuable training and certifications. This role emphasizes teamwork, leadership development, and community service, providing an opportunity for young adults to contribute to environmental stewardship while developing skills for future careers in conservation.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in heavy recreation site improvements including restoration and stabilization.
  • Conduct gravel surfacing and perform painting and repairs on recreation sites.
  • Collect data related to project outcomes and site conditions.
  • Engage in trail building and maintenance activities.
  • Assist in prescribed fire activities, including chainsaw use and establishing containment lines.
  • Provide holding and ignition resources for prescribed burn units.

Requirements

  • Must be between ages 18 and 30, and up to 35 if a military veteran.
  • Able to pass the moderate level pack test.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must have a high school diploma, GED, or agree to attain either during term of service.
  • Exhibits the ability to effectively collaborate on diverse teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • General comfort with and prior experience in outdoor environments.
  • Experience with BIPOC communities.
  • Strong interest in a future career in natural resources, environmental science, parks and recreation, or conservation.
