Our Materials Engineering Product Design team is dedicated to creating and optimizing these materials. We influence and enable innovative enclosure designs across all Apple product lines year after year. We work with the utmost attention to detail, directly impacting the design of products that millions of people around the world love. As a Materials Engineer | Glass & Ceramics within the Materials Product Design organization, you will drive the rapid advancement of materials and processes that are the foundation of Apple devices. Working closely with multi-functional teams and external vendors, you will determine the best materials and processes to meet the stringent requirements in future Apple devices. Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of multi-functional partners and external vendors to architect, test, and validate new material solutions for a wide range of Apple products.
  • Involved in the development of new processes to enable novel designs and push the envelope for what is considered possible in the glass & ceramics space.
  • Deep dive into material fundamentals and creatively solve challenging problems.
  • Collaborate and work well with inter-disciplinary teams to deliver the best material solutions and products to customers.
  • Occasional domestic or international travel (<10%) may be required.

Requirements

  • BS/MS/PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics.
  • Strong materials fundamentals in structure-properties-performance relationship and how this can be optimized to maximize mechanical durability.
  • Excellent background in mechanics and failure mechanisms of various materials.
  • Knowledge of different materials characterization and analysis methods (i.e. SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman, mechanical tests, etc).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to use statistical tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently drive multi projects, setting priorities and deliver products.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, providing technical expertise and updates on project milestones.

Nice-to-haves

  • Technical knowledge of glass, glass-ceramics, structural ceramics or composite systems.
  • Experience in glass or ceramic processing, including glass finishing and shaping methods.
  • Working knowledge of failure analysis in brittle materials and interpretation of results.
  • Applied knowledge/experience with brittle material processing.
