About the position

The Grounds Gardener - 3rd Class at Villanova University is responsible for performing landscape maintenance operations under close supervision. This role involves manual labor tasks related to the upkeep of lawns, shrubs, trees, and other landscape elements, as well as assisting skilled trades and general maintenance personnel. The position emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusion within the university's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual labor tasks such as moving equipment and furniture, cleaning storm drains and curbs, raking and removing leaves, and snow removal.
  • Operate basic power tools including push lawn mowers, power lawn trimmers, edgers, and leaf/trash blowers.
  • Operate light and medium equipment assigned to the Grounds Division.
  • Help identify and correct problems with plants, grasses, trees, and shrubs.
  • Apply fertilizers and weed control materials by hand or using a push spreader.
  • Transport materials and specialty tools to work sites.
  • Clean tools and return them to their proper location; clean the work site.
  • Remove snow, including operating salt spreaders.
  • Notify the supervisor of defects, problem areas, and safety hazards related to grounds/landscape.
  • Assist with various tasks as directed by the tradesperson/maintenance person assigned to the project.
  • Assist in furniture and event setups and breakdowns, decorations for special functions, meetings, etc.
  • Perform other duties assigned within the normal scope of the department's responsibilities and the individual's capabilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with acceptable life experiences in grounds gardening and horticultural work.
  • Valid Driver's License with a good driving record and no traffic violations.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written directions in English.
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, administration, and staff.
  • Ability to read and understand OSHA guidelines and safety data sheets.
  • Physical ability to climb ladders, bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs; ability to work in enclosed spaces.

  • Landscape maintenance experience.
