About the position

The Histology Technician plays a crucial role in the patient care process by preparing tissue specimens for analysis. This position involves executing technical procedures such as grossing, embedding, and staining, while ensuring specimen integrity and compliance with quality control standards. The technician will work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, contributing to the overall mission of advancing health and wellbeing in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Execute grossing, embedding, and preparing slides for routine H&E and special stain procedures.
  • Perform technical aspects of grossing and dictating tissue specimens under the supervision of a Pathologist.
  • Ensure specimen integrity upon arrival and throughout the entire process.
  • Create gross descriptions for each specimen, including anatomical site, size, color, dimensions, and abnormal findings.
  • Dissect and prepare tissue for cassettes.
  • Escalate non-routine complicated specimens to the Pathologist or lead Histotechnician.
  • Load prepared cassettes into tissue processors and start the processor.
  • Perform Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures.
  • Document scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Recognize when troubleshooting is needed for grossing, processing, embedding, cutting, and staining.

Requirements

  • 1 year of laboratory training or experience performing embedding, routine microtomy, and H&E staining of pathology specimens.
  • Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent experience to sit for the exam.
  • Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including telephones, computers, processors, microscopes, and manual and automated staining systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2+ years of laboratory training or experience in a high-volume laboratory with documented special stain and immunohistochemistry experience.
  • Graduation from a school of Histotechnology accredited by CAHEA/NAACLS and HT (ASCP) certification.
  • Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution or equivalent under CLIA guidelines.
