About the position

The Metrologist Associate position at the State of Illinois involves performing comparisons of field and industry standards with state standards, assisting in maintaining traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and supporting the Chief Metrologist in various technical and administrative tasks. This role is essential for ensuring the accuracy of measuring instruments and compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comparisons of field and industry standards with state standards by determining which calibration procedure is needed.
  • Assist Chief Metrologist with routine office functions such as scheduling appointments and record keeping.
  • Consult with the National Institute of Standards Technology as a primary technical resource.
  • Assist Chief Metrologist in maintaining traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology by safeguarding state primary standards instrumentation and associated equipment.
  • Complete assigned NIST problems and maintain the accuracy of sophisticated measuring instruments used.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge equivalent to completion of two years of college with courses in physical sciences, mathematics, physics, or engineering.
  • Successful completion of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) seminars during the first year of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of a wide range of calibration methods, techniques, and instruments.
  • Working knowledge of computers and various software products.
  • Working knowledge of the metric system.
  • Experience with assuming responsibility for extreme accuracy of testing procedures.
  • Experience with interpreting and applying weights and measure laws and regulations.
  • Experience with preparing clear, concise, and accurate laboratory reports.
  • Experience with gaining and maintaining satisfactory working relationships with industry and NIST personnel.
