About the position

In the Operating Room: This position handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. This position can provide the above described services for both basic surgeries and complex surgeries.

Responsibilities

  • Provide proficient skills for surgical services by demonstrating proficiency in the delivery of skills in all of basic services.
  • Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures by ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely.
  • Prepare the sterile field for the surgical procedure by securing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment based on the surgeons preference cards.
  • Actively participate in The Universal protocol standards to include pre-procedure verification, review of surgical preference cards, and set up of surgical field according to case planned.
  • Scrub, gown, and glove using sterile technique.
  • Set up sterile field with instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in draping the sterile field and passing supplies, equipment or instruments.
  • Prepare and cut suture material, transfer and pour irrigation fluids, and label intraoperative medications according to policy.
  • Handle specimens and hold retractors and other instruments.
  • Apply electro cautery to clamps on bleeders and connect drains to suction apparatus.
  • Apply dressings to closed wounds and assist in counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments with the registered nurse circulator.
  • Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the surgical procedure.
  • Participate in the surgical time out to include proper review of the surgical consent and proper identification of the patient.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization on completion of the surgery.
  • Assist the surgical team with cleaning of the operating room on completion of the surgery.
  • Lead team participating in the cleaning and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in professional practice and communicate effectively.
  • Continuously evaluate the outcomes of patient care and work to improve clinical practice.
  • Act as a preceptor of peers in the clinical setting.
  • Incorporate clinical research into clinical practice and remain current with changes in clinical standards of care.
  • Lead unit based quality improvement activities.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training beyond high school required.
  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification issued by an approved organization.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification as required.
