About the position

The Patient Care Supervisor at Rivers Health is responsible for overseeing the Nursing Department and ensuring high-quality patient care across the hospital. This role requires a deep understanding of hospital policies and procedures, as well as the ability to make independent judgments. The supervisor acts as a liaison between the Nurse Director and the administrator on-call, while also ensuring compliance with Utilization Review regulations. The position involves both managerial and clinical responsibilities, including staffing, incident reporting, and problem-solving in collaboration with nursing and ancillary staff.

Responsibilities

  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Assess patient care requirements by making rounds in the Emergency Department and other hospital areas.
  • Implement staffing plans based on patient acuity and census.
  • Serve as a resource for staff in solving clinical issues.
  • Assist staff in efficiently utilizing resources to meet patient care requirements.
  • Provide immediate follow-up and documentation of incidents to appropriate personnel.
  • Respond to emergency situations and assist as needed.
  • Identify and solve administrative and operational problems.
  • Anticipate potential problems and set shift priorities accordingly.
  • Collaborate with nursing and ancillary staff to solve problems fairly and consistently.
  • Contact external department representatives for assistance when necessary.
  • Interpret and ensure adherence to hospital and nursing policies and procedures.
  • Report significant incidents and problems to the administrator-on-call.
  • Obtain materials and supplies for patient care when needed.
  • Provide support, guidance, and feedback to staff on performance.
  • Facilitate staff attendance at development sessions and communicate continuing education needs.
  • Assist staff in interpreting changes positively and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Assist in preparing and implementing annual goals for the department.
  • Stay current with professional development through education programs and research.
  • Follow established safety and infection control protocols and intervene in unsafe situations.
  • Comply with standards of conduct and seek guidance when necessary.
  • Meet or exceed service expectations for individuals served.
  • Assist in determining admission criteria for patients and monitor documentation for compliance with Utilization rules.

Requirements

  • Current registered nurse licensure in the state of West Virginia.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or must obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or must obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or must obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in an acute care setting, with critical care experience preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
