The primary function of the Phlebotomist is to provide both direct and indirect support in the collection of blood and other specimens for diagnostic testing. The Phlebotomist ensures the accurate and efficient collection of blood samples from patients, while maintaining patient safety, comfort, and dignity. They are also responsible for preparing specimens for laboratory analysis, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and documenting all procedures accurately. The Phlebotomist collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.

  • Performs blood draws and other specimen collections for laboratory testing, ensuring accuracy and adherence to established procedures.
  • Prepares blood samples for processing, including labeling, handling, and storage according to safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensures patient comfort and safety during the collection process, providing clear instructions and reassurance.
  • Communicates with patients to obtain relevant medical and consent information, and answers any questions regarding the specimen collection process.
  • Identifies and verifies patients using proper identification methods to ensure the accuracy of specimens.
  • Assists with specimen collection for other diagnostic tests such as urine, stool, and sputum samples, as required.
  • Adheres to infection control policies by maintaining sterile techniques and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Accurately documents patient interactions, procedures, and any complications or issues in the electronic health record (EHR) according to clinic policies.
  • Coordinates with laboratory personnel to ensure proper specimen processing and troubleshooting any issues with samples.
  • Provides patient education regarding the specimen collection process, including any necessary preparations or post-collection instructions.
  • Supports clinical staff by performing additional diagnostic tests such as EKGs, urine tests, or other point-of-care tests when needed.
  • Monitors patient reactions during and after the blood collection procedure, reporting any adverse reactions to the clinical team.
  • Maintains clean and organized collection areas, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are readily available and properly stored.
  • Ensures optimal quality and quantity of samples to meet diagnostic and laboratory requirements.
  • Determines the right venipuncture method based on patient age, health, and other relevant factors to ensure successful blood collection.
  • Ensures accurate patient identification and sample labeling to prevent errors in specimen handling.
  • Coordinates with other healthcare staff to ensure timely collection and processing of specimens to meet laboratory timelines.
  • Monitors and maintains laboratory equipment, ensuring it is clean, calibrated, and functioning correctly.
  • Follows up on abnormal lab results, assisting with further communication and coordination of care as needed.
  • Disposes of contaminated materials in accordance with biohazard waste regulations, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
  • Adheres to confidentiality regulations and privacy standards, maintaining the confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Participates in safety and training activities, including mandatory meetings, and follows all clinic and laboratory policies related to health and safety, sterilization, and quality assurance.
  • Maintains knowledge of current phlebotomy best practices, regulations, and safety guidelines, ensuring high-quality care.
  • Participates in team meetings, offering insights and suggestions for improving patient care and laboratory procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining patient flow by managing scheduling and appointment coordination when necessary.
  • Participates in the morning huddle according to predefined huddle criteria to prepare the chart for the clinician.
  • Follows STP standards for Universal Precautions when working with potentially infectious materials (blood or body fluids).
  • Reports any safety concerns, hazards, or equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.
  • Comply with all safety, emergency, hazard, OSHA, sterilization, clinical, quality assurance, and administrative protocols, guidelines, and standards.
  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations and other relevant laws to protect patient privacy and confidentiality in all communications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the executive leadership and administration.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Technician program.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) preferred (e.g., ASCP, NHA, or equivalent).
  • Current CPR/BLS certification, preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a clinical center environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle difficult or anxious patients.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and infection control procedures.
  • Ability to accurately label and process specimens.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
