Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states. Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our software allows the Waymo Driver to perceive the world around it, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations. We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. If you're a software engineer or researcher who's curious and passionate about Level 4 autonomous driving, we'd like to meet you. Want to build the next generation of infrastructure for driverless cars? The Waymo Commercialization team works on our public, fully autonomous ride-hailing service. Riders can use the Waymo app to hail one of our vehicles (with no human driver in the front seat!) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our riders get a clean vehicle every time and a Driver with more than 20 million miles of experience on public roads. You are someone who is product-minded. You will work on problems requiring cross-team collaboration, both technically (mobile app, cloud backends, and the Waymo Driver) and functionally (operations, product, legal, partnerships, policy & privacy) to develop and deliver business critical infrastructure.

  • Drive the architectural vision and implementation of scalable Fleet software for automating management of Waymo operations
  • Collaborate with Product, Operations, and Data Science teams to refine requirements and build roadmaps
  • Identify and develop solutions to high-leverage cross-system problems
  • Mentor and up level the team around you focusing on building reliable and scalable solutions
  • 10+ years of experience in Technical leadership in large-scale software development environments with an emphasis on backend
  • Orientation towards reliability, experience leading on call operations and driving SRE / software quality best practices
  • Experience driving decisions and outcomes in highly cross-functional contexts often crossing multiple org boundaries
  • Habitually data-driven approach to problem identification, prioritization, and solution evaluation
  • Around balancing short-term needs against long-term goals
  • Background in ride-hailing, logistics/delivery, supply chains, or other operations-heavy domains
  • Experience building software for complex human-involved processes (eg, maintenance or healthcare)
  • Experience with consumer-facing software products or services
  • Experience with nondeterministic software: ML/AI, optimization, robotics, control
  • Experience with complex backend and distributed systems
  • Discretionary annual bonus program
  • Equity incentive plan
  • Generous Company benefits program
