About the position

The Principal Software Engineer position is assigned to the Management Information Systems Department and is responsible for providing thought leadership and operational support to the District's information systems. This role involves recommending business solutions, serving as a liaison between departmental users, information technology staff, and third-party vendors, and ensuring successful integration of software with existing systems. The position requires monitoring systems to meet performance and reliability standards, providing technical leadership, and mentoring IT staff. The Principal Software Engineer will also perform complex programming tasks, design and develop applications, and maintain software and systems for the District.

Responsibilities

  • Provides thought leadership and operational support to the District's information systems.
  • Recommends business solutions and serves as a liaison between departmental users, IT staff, and third-party vendors.
  • Performs complex and analytical work in support of assigned technology programs.
  • Monitors systems for reliability and performance metrics.
  • Coordinates and mentors other IT staff in application design and integration.
  • Gathers user requirements and analyzes current practices to determine feasibility of automated solutions.
  • Designs and develops computer programs using various languages and database platforms.
  • Maintains accuracy and integrity of data for mandated reporting requirements.
  • Identifies system deficiencies and develops enhanced systems for efficiency.
  • Conducts training sessions for application users and technology staff.
  • Serves as project leader on assigned projects, coordinating work of staff.
  • Writes and maintains user and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience providing highly complex technical support to information systems.
