About the position

Science is a clinical stage, vertically integrated technology company focused on solving some of neuroscience’s hardest questions and most serious unmet medical needs. We work to restore quality of life to those with debilitating conditions for which there are no treatment options, creating devices aimed at restoring vision, cognition, and mobility to patients who have lost it. To support progress across our industry, we provide state-of-the-art components and vertically integrated infrastructure for others to build on via Science Foundry. Science is developing a software platform that will touch every part of the company, from collecting neural data to tracking devices through assembly to streamlining purchasing. We are looking for an experienced web engineer to join onsite in Alameda, CA to help build out this platform, in close collaboration with a world-class team of scientists and engineers. You will work with the microfabrication, biology, animal behavior, surgery, and ops teams to build tools that they will use every day. Great communication skills are a must, and we're looking for technical and product judgment above all: can you ask the right questions to absorb other people’s mental models, then turn around and build things that make sense for the situation, quickly?

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to build a software platform that supports various operational and R&D processes.
  • Work with cross-functional teams including microfabrication, biology, animal behavior, surgery, and logistics.
  • Act as your own product manager to understand core requirements for effective solutions.
  • Take ownership of projects and adapt to a fast-paced startup environment.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience as a web software engineer, with significant depth in either backend or fullstack development.
  • Deep understanding of modern web applications design architecture, good API design patterns, and performance.
  • Adaptable and proactive in a fast-paced, startup environment.
  • Ability to address technical debt appropriately while continuing to build new features.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Rails, React, Typescript, or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with app deployment and devops.
