About the position

The Staff Nurse (RN) position at the University of Chicago Medicine involves providing patient-centered care in the 5NW Med/Surg department, which is an 18-bed telemetry capable unit. The role requires managing care for adult inpatients with various medical conditions, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, and ensuring high standards of nursing practice. This full-time, night shift position emphasizes professional growth and development, with a commitment to ongoing education and patient care excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs.
  • Develops a plan of care for patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager for specified patients.
  • Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned by Care Center Director or Patient Care Manager.
  • Provides support to peers by assisting as needed and working as a team member.
  • Assists Care Center in development and attainment of goals and objectives.
  • Uses clinical pathways and/or plans of care incorporating standards of practice.
  • Assesses own need for professional growth and development and seeks appropriate resources to meet those needs.
  • Attends continuing education programs and participates in program evaluation.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with a requirement to enroll in a BSN program within 6-9 months of hire and complete it within 30 months.
  • Current Illinois RN license.
  • Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
