As a UI/UX Lead Developer, you'll be instrumental in shaping the user experience and interface of our mission-critical system solution. You'll lead the charge in creating intuitive, engaging, and effective UIs that directly support the complex needs of our analysts and operators. Leveraging your expertise in JavaScript frameworks (Angular, React, TypeScript), UI/UX design principles, and user-centered development, you'll guide a small team and contribute directly to exceptional user experiences. This role demands a leader who can translate intricate user needs and evolving requirements into innovative UI/UX solutions, helping to define the future of our intelligence community tool.
Responsibilities
- Lead the UI Team, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and fostering a collaborative environment.
- Meet regularly with program leadership and management to discuss project status, roadmaps, and strategic UI/UX initiatives.
- Work closely with the Data and Analytics SME, Solution Architect, and Product Manager to define and refine features.
- Collaborate directly with Product to help define and refine requirements for UI features.
- Proactively engage directly with users to understand their workflows, pain points, and preferences.
- Assist with the creation and ongoing management of Jira content, workflows, and boards.
- Take ownership of the software, visual, and UX design, ensuring consistency, usability, and aesthetic appeal.
- Develop and enforce UI/UX standards, design rules, and style guides.
- Lead the creation of interactive prototypes and mock-ups to visualize design concepts.
- Spearhead the development of future UI/UX concepts for the tool.
- Continuously analyze and find ways to improve current UI/UX workflows and processes.
- Work closely with external groups that provide core UI components to propose and guide updates.
- Assist with UI implementation as able, jumping into code to help unblock the team.
- Guide the implementation of UI features and actively iterate on designs.
Requirements
- A minimum of 8 years of software development experience with a strong emphasis on front-end development and UI/UX design.
- At least 2 years in a lead or senior design role.
- Hands-on experience with JavaScript/TypeScript programming languages and modern frameworks (e.g., Angular, React).
- Demonstrated experience leading UI/UX design and development efforts from concept to deployment.
- Deep understanding of user-centered design principles, information architecture, and usability best practices.
- Experience with JavaScript unit testing (e.g., Jasmine) and end-to-end testing (e.g., Cypress).
- Proficiency in evaluating current test coverage and defining additional tests for vital code coverage.
- Familiarity with modern software development practices, cloud-based technologies, and DevSecOps principles.
- Experience providing remote technical support to mission operators and analysts.
- Strong documentation skills and experience preparing and delivering briefs to senior government leadership.
- Comprehensive understanding of milestones and expectations within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
- Proven experience on an Agile software development team.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with, or willingness to learn, advanced JavaScript testing with Cypress.
- Familiarity with OpenLayer maps and/or D3 visualization libraries.
- Experience with Microsoft Visual Studio Code IDE.
- Experience with the Atlassian tool suite (Jira, Confluence) beyond basic usage.
- Experience creating and maintaining comprehensive design systems.
