About the position

The Utilities Technician I position involves performing a variety of heavy manual tasks related to the installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution and sewer collection systems. This essential role requires working overtime during severe weather and being on call for emergencies outside of normal work hours. The technician will be responsible for reading and maintaining water meters, installing service connections, and ensuring compliance with safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Perform heavy manual tasks to install, repair, and maintain water distribution and sewer collection systems.
• Read and maintain water meters for accurate utility billing.
• Install water and sewer service connections as needed.
• Operate manual and powered rodding machines to clear sewer line obstructions.
• Assist in the repair and extension of sewer and water lines, including cutting and laying pipes.
• Conduct service maintenance tasks such as disconnects and restoring water service.
• Assist in cleanup activities at work sites and maintain tools and equipment.
• Establish traffic control measures during work activities.
• Assist with storm drain inspection and cleaning as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license with an excellent driving record.
• Ability to follow safety guidelines and procedures.
• Some knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety requirements of equipment and machinery used.
• Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
• Ability to read and write.

Nice-to-haves
